Cyril Pereira

There cannot be any doubt in the mind of any of the 150 delegates who attended this years Asian Publishing Convention that the digital world had been embraced by the publishing industry around the region. The industry is moving on. Cyril Pereira, Co-Chairman of the event reminded the audience that in the early days of APC when they pushed digital publishing, many thought APC had “gone to bed with the devil”.

The talk at this year was about how to monetise the business. Franchising, licensing and monetising content were hot topics at the 2012 event held in the Crowne Plaza Mutiara hotel in Kuala Lumpur on 30th November to 1st December 2012.

Dr. Bill Belew, Chief Executive Officer of CosmoFair Network.

The sessions were well attended and there were some excellent speakers over the one and half-days. One of the liveliest was a fast-talking American called Bill Belew who packed in an amazing amount of information aimed at helping publishers get their content noticed.

The Asian Publishing Awards were given out during a Gala Dinner for the delegates. There were 157 entries from 8 countries around the region and a total of 55 awards were presented. There were some outstanding print entries especially from Singapore. It was obvious that digital technology had also expanded the publishers’ scope and the winners in this category showed imagination and innovation.

During the event, the Pan Asia Publishing Alliance Network (PAPAN) held a meeting and elected pro-tem officers for the coming year. SK Ho was elected pro tem President, Cyril Pereira was elected pro tem Secretary and MV Swaminathan was elected pro-tem Treasurer.

This body will represent publishers, associations, and allied industries. A constitution is being drawn up and membership details hammered out.

APC is organised by Exedra Events, which must be one of the best event organisers in the region. Next year, the APC event will probably be held in Myanmar. All publishers and editors should make the effort to be there.
