On 13th February 2011, the industry lost a long serving stalwart. Al-NasirBin Packer had not been in good health for some years because of a heart condition. On hearing of his death, the tributes poured in. We think he would have been surprised at the love and affection expressed by many who had been friends and colleagues of “Nas”.
E-mails with condolences crossed the world as Singaporeans and expats who now live overseas remembered the man. Few of us will be lucky enough when we live this world to generate such a huge outpouring.
Nasir was sent by his Mother to art lesson along with his sister and this is probably what stimulated him to enter advertising on the creative side. He started his career at a local agency Loy Chin Associates where he worked with Francis Moh. He eventually moved to Asia Ads, part of the Fortune Group, as Studio Manager. He moved on to MDA which morphed into Mojo, then Chiat/Day/Mojo and finally Standard-CDM where he remained a central figure until the agency was sold. Colleagues will remember Nasir was someone we all relied upon when things got tough. He was a bit of a lad at times and quite a character yet he also had a generous heart.
Once out of the agency business, he spent more time with his cats which managed to win prize after prize at local cat shows while he won personally in areas like cage design where his artistic talent shone through.
Nasir was in regular contact with his ex-colleagues up to the day of his death. A good man, and one we will remember for a long time to come.
