The Asia advertising and film industry missed the regional creative show last year when the Asia Pacific Advertising Festival (AdFest) had to be cancelled.

But it has bounced back in 2011 with the theme ‘Jump Start’.

It has also moved from Pattaya, a destination that raised eyebrows with our wives and girlfriends, to the resort island of Phuket. The Movenpick Resort and Spa at Karon Beach is the venue.

The popular conference presentations are back. The Gunn Report gives us the lowdown of the agencies which are winning the most awards and an opportunity to see some great work from around the world. The Young Lotus Awards sponsored by TBWA Asia Pacific stretch the young teams taking part in this competition between countries. One is always amazed at what the teams turn out in such a short time (usually they have little sleep).

This year there is a talk on animation by Marko Kliyn of Cirkus, a presentation by a famous comedy director, Fracois Chilot, from the Parisian production house and several other interesting talks over the three day event.

The AdFest seems to attract the young creative boys and girls rather than the jaded old professionals. One can sense the enthusiasm and energy. While the old guys go down the pub in the evenings, these young people study the entries carefully. As there are usually over 1,000ads this takes some time!

Set aside March 17th to 19th to attend AdFest 2011. Sun, sea and great work – just what you need to recharge the batteries and remember why you came into the ad business.
