This was the 24th year of the Singapore Design Awards. Two hundred and sixty guests, which included representatives from other design organisations and a smattering of past DAS presidents, came to the Fullerton Hotel Singapore to enjoy the recent gala dinner and the presentation of awards.

The event is organised by the Designers Association of Singapore which that night officially rebranded itself the Design Business Chamber Singapore. Lawrence Chong, the current President of DAS/DBCS, drew the audiences’ attention to the fact that the local design companies had an annual turnover of $400 million which, while he admitted this was not large compared to other segments, but the nature of design meant this industry had a disproportionate impact on the economy.

Chong, who was one of the prime movers behind the rebranding of the decades-old society, said that the ambition and core mission of the organisation remained the same.

There were a record number of entries across many disciplines of design. The most trophies were picked up by DIA Brand Consultants but other well-known names in the Singapore design community like Bonsey Design, Consulus, Epigram, Equus and Asylum also did well. Outside of the consultants sector, Kingsmen Exhibits who sponsored the dinner, Nanyang Polytechnic and National Parks were all honoured that night.

Unlike earlier years, this was a local affair. Let’s hope the Singapore Design Awards will once more invite international designers to enter. Singapore can and does compete on the international stage and this important show should, if it attracts overseas entries and interest, ensure Singapore is seen as the Asian centre of creativity.
