Now in its 5th year, the Shape the World Conference has been conducted around the region by the organiser, Consulus, a leading business management and design consultancy. The Singapore conference was held at the Fullerton Hotel on 22nd October.

The theme was “What is Asia’s Brand of Leadership?”. Opening the conference, Lawrence Chong, CEO of Consulus, said that ideas and innovations were being contracted out to Western companies. He felt that one of the problems was the quality of leaders in the region. They were working in a style of management stuck in the industrial age and not moving into the information age. Chong said we should not cut & paste solutions which originated in the West. The Asia century was not being shaped by Asians.

“We are facing the next tsunami of powerful western companies. If Asian companies do not embrace innovation, then they will be overrun within the next decade,” said Chong.

A lively presentation by Dr Low Lee Yong, CEO and Founder of MHC Asia Group, followed. He told the story of his humble beginnings and struggle to establish his company working in the healthcare field. Professor Dr M Din Syamsuddin, Chairman of Muhammadiyah, spoke of creating a community and Adrian Mok, Managing Director of Hivelocity, a sports agency, related his career journey and the difficulties faced in developing and staging his Sundown Marathon, which has now grown into a major event in Singapore.
