The snap general election and public holiday in Singapore did not halt Spikes Asia 2015. The chronic air pollution drifting over from Indonesia may have suffocated those outdoors but the speakers at this event within Suntec City were in fine voice.

The organisers had lined up a broad spectrum of presentations as well as plenty of evening entertainment for the thousand plus delegates. The speakers ranged from a comedian from India paying tribute to YouTube to the actress Christina Hendricks speaking about her role in the TV series ‘Madmen’. Of course, there were plenty of agency professionals too, like Matt Eastwood, Global Chief Creative Officer of J. Walter Thompson, who was also a Jury President for the awards. He spoke on the need to be curious and always ask questions – to be dumb.

Although Fergus O’Hare, Head of Creative Shop, APAC, had only joined Facebook a few weeks earlier, he was both entertaining and informative as he described the new opportunities offered to advertisers by his new employer. Bates Chi & Partners managed to pull off its “CEO in the hotseat” dialogue on stage with CEO David Mayo and his regional staff exploring the value and needs of younger people in the agency world.

The change on operational models was picked up by Andre Benett, Global CEO, Havas Creative Group & Havas Worldwide. And AKQA also spoke of seismic technological and cultural transformations affecting agencies. It was left to Nils Anderson, Chief Creative Officer of TBWA Greater China remind us that the idea is always the key. The title of his presentation “It all starts with a Pencil” says it all.

The three days, from 9th-11th September, offered the delegates a full programme with tech talks in break-out sessions and almost continuous screening of Cannes Lions winners and other films. Most delegates, we believe, would give the 2015 show a thumb-up.

The Awards Ceremony was held at the Ritz Carlton, followed by an ‘After Party’ hosted by Leo Burnett. Click here to view the results of the Spikes Asia 2015 award winners.
